In Remembrance of Mrs. Sue Egli
Mrs. Sue Egli, GMS Athletic Coordinator passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2021 with her family by her side. Mrs. Egli had suffered a stroke and was in a rehabilitation facility at the time of her death. Staff members Laura Rupp, Terri Blosser, Kim Dalton, and Jan Baker were able to visit Sue over the weekend (in person, and through an open window). They told Sue about all the staff members it has taken to do her job while she has been away, and that they still do not have her job all figured out yet! They also talked about the students and staff that she has meant so much to for the past 26 years.
Sue was certainly loved by so many GMS staff and students as she also loved students and staff. Mrs. Egli was first employed with Goshen Community Schools in August 1994 as a paraprofessional and then as a secretary at Goshen Middle School. She was later named the Athletic Coordinator for GMS, and spent many years working with GMS coaches, student athletes, and parents to provide opportunities for students to experience what it meant to compete for and represent their school. How many hours did Sue spend at GMS setting up for athletic events, scheduling officials, printing rosters, setting up the concession stand, taking money at the gates, and warmly greeting the public? Probably no one really knows the answer to that, except maybe her husband Roger. However, most of the community knew that she enjoyed leading the GMS athletic program and that she always gave more than was required or expected of her.
Mrs. Egli’s 26 years of dedicated service to Goshen Middle School has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students. Her compassion and support for every teacher and staff member at GMS will be greatly missed. Her commitment to sustaining an excellent athletic program, not only for GMS athletes, but also for Big 11 conference athletes, is to be commended. As a result of her superb service, Mrs. Egli was honored by her peers, and named the District 2 Middle School Athletic Administrator of the Year by the IIAAA (Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) in 2008, 2013, and 2019. Also, according to Dave Preheim, Concord Athletic Director, “The Big 11 Conference began play in Fall 2003. I was the initial commissioner of that conference, and Sue was instrumental in helping form the conference (merging the Hart County Athletic Conference the Bi-County Conference).”
Sue’s son Jaime asked GMS principal Jan Baker to let our school community know how much he appreciates GMS, and all that GMS has meant to his mother through the years. Goshen Community Schools requests that you keep Sue’s entire family and the GMS staff in your thoughts during the coming weeks and months. Sue was a long-time, important presence at Goshen Middle School, and she will be greatly missed. Visitation for the public will be in the Goshen Middle School gymnasium from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30th. A graveside service reserved for the family will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Goshen Middle School Athletics may be made in Sue’s honor.
May there be peace for Sue’s family and our school community.
