Chandler Chase/Hispanic Heritage Celebration
The Chandler Chase, a 5K fun run/walk, will be held at Fidler Pond Park in Goshen on Saturday, October 7th at 10:00 a.m. Competitors of all skill levels are welcome to participate!
Back at the school, following the run/walk, Chandler will host the Hispanic Heritage celebration. Chandler has had a Hispanic Heritage celebration in one form or another since about 2003. The event has morphed over the years into its current form, which involves more community members, and has been run similarly for the past four years.
The event is for Chandler Kindergartners and their families to celebrate the diversity at Chandler and in the city of Goshen; particularly celebrating what we love about the Latino culture, and affirming their contributions to our society and school. The goal is for non-Latinos to learn more about Latino culture, to enable Latino children to celebrate and learn more about their culture, and for Latinos to feel the affirmation of their greater community; leading to a greater sense of community in the classrooms, school, and greater Goshen.
The celebration will include face painting by a Chandler mom, a carry-in meal provided by parent volunteers, guitar music (Latino and our own Chris Collat), the kindergarten students dancing to La Raspa (Mexican Hat dance) as taught by the school music teacher, and EL Grupo Folklorico of Goshen performing traditional dances.
Chandler will also have books from the school library by or about Latinos or Latin America available for families to check out, and a paper bag piñata craft for kids to make and take home.
The event will be held on Saturday from 12-3 p.m. in the Chandler cafeteria (and gym for final dance) after the Chandler Chase.
