by Jim Kirkton and Phil Lederach Goshen High School's efforts to increase rigor in a personalized environment |
This is a book written by the people who understand education the best--our staff.
Read how different professional learning communities have accepted the challenge of continuous improvement through continuous change.
With decisions based on a model that focuses attention on what students have learned as opposed to what is taught, this staff looks for ways to have students perform at a higher level.

We want to create a larger professional learning community for sharing best educational practice.
(Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to benefit students who do not have the resources to participate in opportunities offered by our school.)
This is a practitioner’s book with a message that teachers in our country ARE making a concerted effort to help students. This book shares the successes and failures our staff experienced while walking through the murky waters of raising expectations for students through creating a personal environment for students in a school that is rapidly changing into a diverse, urban high school. Faced with the challenge and the strength of the largest English language learner population in Indiana, Goshen High School staff has been on a journey to improve the learning opportunities for our students. This book shares only some of the efforts we have made, but it does show how following a learning model, working in professional learning communities, and creating a small school climate for students plants the seeds for increasing academic rigor and ultimately, increased academic performance of students from all backgrounds and cultures. Building relationships with students and building relationships with teaching peers fuels the engine of our school.

We wrote this book to share what we have done, not because we have the answers, but because we have some good questions. When educators get together to look at student learning, great things can happen. We have increased our communication within our building, but would like to expand these conversations to a broader audience because there is so much to learn. This book will provide meaning for all educators who are on the journey. There is hope and there can be action. |
